Green Triangle

The forests in the Green Triangle Region of South Australia are primarily for wood production and have limited opportunities for recreation. During the Fire Danger Season, it is suggested visitors stay out of the forest for their own safety and to protect the forest from fire. Because access is restricted during this time you must contact the Forest Ranger before your visit. Where access is permitted, visitors should avoid logging operations and obey any signs.

Forestry Information Bay

The Penola Forest Information Stop, 4 kms north of Nangwarry, provides a quiet picnic area, information on forestry in the region, and a walking trail through an adjoining forest arboretum.

Interpretive signs provide current information on forestry, the founding of forestry and of the growth of the industry in the Region. The adjoining Arboretum, mainly planted in 1934 provides a practical comparison into the growth of various Pine and Eucalypt species.
The walking trail throught the arboretum takes about 20 minutes.
Fires and camping are not permitted.

Caving in South East Forests

LICENCED DIVERS ONLY

There are a number of caves and sinkholes in the South East Forest Reserves. They range from small inaccessible shafts to large water filled features.

A permit is required before entering any cave or sinkhole on a Forest Reserve. Permits can only be obtained through the SE Forest Ranger located at the Forestry Office in Mount Gambier.

Permits to access the "dry" caves are generally only given to members of the public affiliated with relevant caving groups and with relevant caving experience.

Permits to access the "wet" caves or sinkholes are only given to members of the Cave Divers Association of Australia with appropriate qualifications, due to the dangerous nature of the activity.
