Mount Lofty Ranges Forests

ForestrySA's Mount Lofty Ranges region includes forest at Mount Crawford, Kuitpo and Second Valley.

These forests provide sustainable wood production within a picturesque community playground just an hour's drive from the city of Adelaide.

ForestrySA promotes passive recreational activities. For your safety, vehicle access is restricted to camping and picnicking areas. Limited public vehicle access is available in some forest areas.

Please note that camping is prohibited from 1 December to 31 March. The main access gate to the campgrounds will be closed at 4pm daily during this time.

Safety message for Fox Creek Mountain Bike Trail users
Following recent storm events across South Australia, several trails and tracks in the Fox Creek area are closed due to significant land slips and fallen trees. The closures will remain in place until remedial work can be carried and the area made safe. For your own safety, please observe all track and trail closures. Users should also be aware of the possibility of future land slips and falling trees.

Mount Crawford Forest

Mount Crawford Forest is situated in the northern Mount Lofty Ranges, one hour's drive from Adelaide, about seven kilometres from Williamstown.

From Adelaide you can take the North East Road to Gumeracha, then turn off to Williamstown.

Please note that parts of the Mount Crawford Forest remain closed following the Sampson Flat fire in January 2015. Click here for more information.

Kuitpo Forest

Kuitpo Forest is situated in the South Mount Lofty Ranges, 45 minutes' drive from Adelaide, near the township of Meadows.

From Adelaide you can take the Main South Road, then turn off to Clarendon and Meadows, or take the South Eastern Freeway to Hahndorf, then turn off to Echunga and Meadows.

Forest access permits

Permits are required for certain in-forest activities and events.

This helps ForestrySA to look after its forest areas for the benefit of local communities and visitors, ensuring they remain popular for years to come.

To obtain a forest access permit for activities within the Mount Lofty Ranges Forest, please use the self-issue and payment facilities located outside ForestrySA's Mount Crawford and Kuitpo forest offices or get in touch using the details above.

Please note that electronic permits will not be accepted.

The forest is closed to the public on declared Total Fire Ban days. In the event of a fire call 000.

No fires of any kind are permitted to be lit by members of the public on ForestrySA land, including all Forest Reserves, between November 1 and April 30 in any year. Camping is prohibited from 1 December to 31 March. The main access gate to the campgrounds will be closed at 4pm every day during this period.
