The Coopers Pale Ale Rally SA was held in the northern Mt Lofty Ranges during August. This national round of the Australian Rally Championship attracted 30 competitors and a highlights package was later shown on television. The main spectator focus at Mount Crawford Forest Reserve is considered by the organisers to be the best public rally viewing facility in Australia. An estimated 26 000 spectators viewed the rally over the three days at this location as well as at the opening event in Tanunda. ForestrySA helped the organisers establish the spectator area and prepare for the event. The forest tracks used by the rally have been upgraded each year since the event commenced three years ago.
October saw the ‘Trailblazer Challenge’ event held in South Australia. The event consisted of 334 people organised into 81 teams competing to walk or run up to 100 km within 48 hours. The event followed the Heysen Trail through the Mount Lofty Ranges and ended at the Kuitpo Forest Information Centre. The event raised significant funds to support Operation Flinders – a world-leading adventure wilderness program for young offenders and young people at risk.
