INTEGRATED MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS AND
CONTINUAL IMPROVEMENT
During 2003-2004 ForestrySA continued to evolve its Integrated Management System incorporating environmental, safety and quality.
In August 2003 ForestrySA was awarded certification upgrade from ISO 9002 to the new quality standard ISO 9001:2000. A key focus of the new standard is our ability to respond to our customer’s needs and expectations, reflecting the manner in which concerns are received and the timeliness of providing an appropriate resolution to issues. As a result our Customer Response Program has commenced development with the participation of key stakeholders in our business.
In response to our customers needs, ForestrySA has commenced working toward certification under the (interim) Australian Forestry Certification (AFS). In utilising the foundations of our existing Environmental Management System (EMS), AFS accreditation is expected to demonstrate to our customers ForestrySA’s environmental credentials in a market of expanding environmental awareness. This includes demonstrating that our business is committed to continually improving its strategic and operational practices in key areas of environmental performance, social responsibility and sustainable economic growth.
As part of the improvement to our internal auditing processes, an Internal Auditor Training Course was held in November 2003, with 10 participants introduced to Integrated Management System auditing. The course covered the Quality, Safety and Environmental standards, their synergies, differences and the benefits of a common integrated management system approach.

INTEGRATED RISK MANAGEMENT

ForestrySA commenced development of an Integrated Risk Management (IRM) program during October 2003.
Based on the standard AS/NZS 4360: 1999 our IRM provides an umbrella framework for determining all potential strategic and operational risk issues which may impact the business. As a corporate governance tool, the IRM will provide the ForestrySA Board with the means of tracking business risk performance including determining opportunities for improved risk management.

On an operational level, the introduction of a field based pocket hazard report booklet occurred during 2003-2004 to assist with risk and hazard identification.
ForestrySA staff are encouraged to eliminate hazards and risks as they emerge. A record of basic causes and treatments of the hazard for further investigation is also maintained. Risk rankings reflecting medium to high issues are then analysed for trends and reported to Forestry Executive for review and appropriate action.
