FOREST FIRE PROTECTION
The protection of forest assets is an important goal. Fire has the capacity to adversely impact the commercial and conservation aspects of the plantation and native forest resource as well as to threaten life and property generally.
A key strategy for ForestrySA has been the replacement of the ageing RFW fire truck and tanker fleet. The first stage of this replacement program has been achieved with the arrival of the first FireKing fire truck in June 2004. The first of the RFW tankers has also been sold and replaced by a later model tanker that has been refurbished with central tyre inflation technology. These new vehicles will provide significant improvements in ForestrySA’s capacity to safely manage our fire management activities.
Overall the fire season 2003-04 was relatively quiet due to favourable weather conditions. ForestrySA attended 20 fires. Principally these fires were on land not owned or managed by ForestrySA. Fires in ForestrySA plantations burnt approximately 1ha in total, with the source of these fires being lightning and arson.
ForestrySA has also reviewed its position in regard to fire insurance. Fire insurance premiums are increasing, while the number of international insurers willing to cover major forest investments has decreased.
However, ForestrySA continues to address fire management and risk issues as an ongoing concern and has worked closely with the Country Fire Service, Department of Environment and Heritage and the Bureau of Meteorology to develop close links on a regional basis with industry and the community. ForestrySA continues to work with a range of interests to further harmonise and improve operating procedures. ForestrySA together with other industry interests worked to secure an additional water bombing fixed wing aircraft in the South East. ForestrySA has also agreed with the Department of Environment and Heritage, the Country Fire Service and SA Water to share the cost of constructing a new airstrip at Mount Crawford Forest Reserve. This airstrip is expected to be operational for the 2004-2005 fire season.

In November 2001 the South Australian Cabinet approved the Government Energy Efficiency Action Plan, a comprehensive whole-of-government energy management program that will improve energy efficiency and reduce costs across all sectors of the government’s operations. The Premier officially launched the Plan on 3 May 2002.
ForestrySA is continually refining and monitoring our strategy to achieve the targets set by the South Australian Government.
